Messerblock Test

How to Buy Kitchen Knife Sets

April 3, 2012

MesserblockShopping around for the best kitchen knives might be a tedious task. You definitely want to own high quality knives, but at the same time, you want to avoid spending several hundreds of dollars on the extremely sophisticated Messerblock sets that are intended for chefs. These come with accessories that you will not even get to use. Therefore, here are a few things that you should keep in mind:

Messerblock-right before buying, make sure to get your hands on the knife. You need to see whether these knives are comfortable to hold; after all, you are the one that is going to use them the most. There are several stores available where you can even test a knife by chopping on a board with it. This way, you will immediately feel if this is the knife you have been looking for.

Messerblock-look for compact Messerblock sets. You don’t want a sophisticated set with 10 accessories that you will only keep in your drawer. A very good example of a quality compact set is the one from Twin Gourmet (the 9-piece knife set). This one comes with 5 knives including bread knife, chef’s knife, paring knife, a meat cutter and a utility knife. In addition, the set also contains 2 important accessories: the all purpose scissors and a nice meat fork. You don’t need more accessories than these!
-you need to purchase knives that have blades made of high quality stainless steel (especially German Zwillinger!). Don’t buy knives that have somewhat flexible blades- you need strong blades that will offer stability and comfort while you are working with them.
-make sure the handle of the knife is heavy enough. This way, you will have the balance that you need while cutting and chopping with your knife. When a knife has a lightweight handle, you need to add more pressure each time you perform a task- thus, more hand strain is needed.
-Remember to read the Messerblock test available online- see what other people say who actually own the respective set.
